If Daniel Bassey Okon, an Uyo-based barber knew that his friend, was planning to cut short his life on Tuesday, 28th of July, 2015, he would avoid him like plague and vow never to be in any relationship.
He would not have gone to his house, let alone eat or drink, and the worst, spending a night with him.
But, nobody knows what one plans in one's heart.
As a young man, he was full of life attending to customers. And after the day's business in his shop at Itu Road in Uyo, few miles away from the University of Uyo, Daniel, a graduate of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, went to his evil friend's house, on invitation, not knowing his plan, neither did he know that death was waiting for him.
According to reports, his friend welcomed him, gave him a drink and agreed to pass the night in his residence.
And then came the evil intention. While he was deep sleeping in the night, his friend, Anoma Stephen, a native of Njikoka in Anambra State, took a matchet and cut his body into pieces like an experienced butcher do to a cow.
First, he chopped off his head, later the hands, thighs, and other parts of the body, before packing them in a polythene bag and dumped in a bin.
As if that was not enough, he dumped other parts of the body in a bush.
Neigbours and passers-by woke up Tuesday morning to see the body in a gutter with sensitive parts removed.
They couldn't identified the victim, since it has no head for easy recognition.
Then came tears, sorrow and fear in the community. Everyone deserted the area.
No shop was open. People ran away for fear of being arrested as suspects over the incident.
As they say nothing can be hidden under the sun, the dastardly act was uncovered by the police from Akwa Ibom State Command, through the aid of detecting and tracking devices.
The suspect was picked up by the security operatives and he is cooling his feet in the police cells.
But what could drive a sane young man of 32 to take the life of his fellow young guy, whom he described as his boy, by cutting him into pieces? Above all, what could be his intention?
These are some of the questions journalists put to Anona when he was paraded at the State Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, today.
His reason? Debt.
He told newsmen that he killed his friend because according to him, he refused to refund the N750,000 he borrowed from him as a loan to manage his barbing business.
Anona said he was angry and decided to cut his friend into pieces with matchet.
Could this be true? Only Daniel can tell. But, since the dead cannot talk, he is unable to defend himself.
Commissioner of Police, Gabriel Achong said investigation into the incident has commenced to unravel the circumstance that could have led to the murder of the young man, from Uruan local government area of Akwa Ibom State.
