Nigerians react to President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointments

Stop ethnic sentiments
Kayode Ajulo, National Secretary, Labour Party
Shun tribal and ethnic sentiments for now since President Muhammadu Buhari has yet to make appointments stipulated by the Constitution. Those (officers) recognised by the constitution have yet to be filled by the President. We are waiting for him to do this.
Though by the recent appointments, the President is violating the constitution, but I think we should eschew tribalism and ethnicity for now. Let us wait until the President appoints his ministers, advisers and others before reaching any conclusion.

Buhari’s appointments disheartening
Dr. Joseph Nwobike (SAN), Lawyer
It is disheartening and perhaps, indicative of the direction the administration of President Buhari is heading to. His newly appointed Chief of Staff is the Secretary General of Arewa Consultative Forum. The man is the think-tank of the Forum.

If that is how the President intends to run the country, I believe that some other nationalities may want to dissociate themselves from his administration. I urge him to carry everyone along as he marches on.
Daura’s appointment not defendable
Jaafar Jaafar
How do you defend President Buhari’s decision to resurrect Lawal Musa Daura from retirement and appoint him Director-General of DSS?
Buhari came to rid Nigeria of corruption, unemployment, nepotism, and cronyism. We all shouted during campaign to tell the world that Buhari was detribalised; Buhari was a nationalist to the core. But to say the fact, these appointments don’t portray him as one.
Of course, leaders feel more at home with their kinsmen heading key security outfits. All I am saying is that the president’s appointments are skewed and are portraying him in bad light.
Nigerians are watching
Mr. Major Agbo, National Secretary, New Nigeria Peoples Party
It appears to me as if the man is looking for a team that would deliver on his numerous campaign promises to Nigerians and does not appear to bother whether the constitutionally stipulated federal character principle is being violated.
He is just being driven by the passion to salvage a ‘perceived’ sinking state, irrespective of who is negatively affected. He needs to know that we have a federation that should be run through established laws. All the federating units must be part of the government to avoid unnecessary litigation against constitutional violations. There are still many more appointments to be made and Nigerians are watching to see what will happen.
Buhari has violated the Constitution
Mr. Fred Agbaje, Lawyer
He has violated Section 14(3) of the Constitution, which reads: ‘The composition of the Government of the Federation or any of its agencies and the conduct of its affairs shall be carried out in such a manner as to reflect the federal character of Nigeria and the need to promote national unity, and also to command national loyalty, thereby ensuring that there shall be no predominance of persons from a few states or from a few ethnic or other sectional groups in that government or in any of its agencies.’
The appointments are also of the same religious setting in clear violation of Section 14(3) of the constitution.
He should obey the constitution
Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, Legal practitioner and human rights activist
Appointments into offices in Nigeria should be governed by section 14 of the 1999 Constitution to guarantee federal character. Such appointments must first reflect merit, be representative of all the critical sections of our national life, be sensitive to our religious leanings and indeed be gender friendly.
So far, Buhari has not reflected this in his appointments, even though the major appointments are still being expected into the federal executive council.
The President cannot carry on as if other sections of the country do not exist, as every part of Nigeria must feel a sense of representation in all appointments.
